Gift Ideas for Sleuths

Ready or not, the gift-giving season is upon us! Whether you celebrate Sinterklaas, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah or any other opportunity to give presents during the dark days of the winter solstice, we’ve got ideas aplenty. As in previous years, the ABC Staff has looked through their sections and hand-picked various choice literary jewels for your gift-giving pleasure.

We will present these titles in a series of blog posts and recommendation lists throughout the coming month. We hope you will find some inspiration in them, but please remember that these titles only represent a tiny fraction of the books on offer in our stores. Be sure to stop by to see what else there is in the area of your interest!

“Just one more thing…”  For those of you who are always wondering whodunnit, howdunnit, and whendunnit, here are some gift ideas from our Crime/Mysteries & Thrillers, True CrimeEspionage, Historical Fiction and Horror sections. If you want more tips, meet our Crime/Mysteries & Thrillers buyers: Pleun, PeterL and Jouke!

You can find our gift ideas from previous years here (scroll down a bit to 2013 and beyond), and be sure to have a look at our ABC Favorites, too.

Crime / Mysteries & Thrillers

Ebook available of Gray Mountain, The Mistletoe Bride and other Haunting Tales, Gone Girl, By Its Cover and The Monogram Murders.

“A must-read this winter will be the new John Grisham. Always exciting and this new installment will have you on the edge of your seat. A real page turner from the master.” – ABC Amsterdam’s Crime buyer Pleun on Gray Mountain.

“Do you ever feel like reading but your attention span does not allow you to read a whole book? Then this is perfect for you. Short, well-written ghost/crime/horror stories that will leave you fulfilled at the end of the evening. Personal favorite is definitely ‘The Drowned Village’.” – Pleun on The Mistletoe Bride and other Haunting Tales.

“Please please please take this advice: FIRST READ THE BOOK and then watch the movie! I love this writer; she has a way of getting under your skin and after Sharp Objects and Dark Places she is on a roll with this great novel. Wonderfully crafted and with twists you will never expect!” – Pleun on Gone Girl.

True Crime/Espionage

Ebook available of GCHQ.

“Fascinating stories about the history of Forensic Science. It is all more difficult and more intriguing that those simple CSI plots.” – ABC Amsterdam’s  True Crime / Espionage buyer Maarten on Beating the Devil’s Game.

“The US has the NSA, but the UK has an equally scary ‘Big Brother’ organization, the GCHQ. They might have a nice building, but they do exactly the same as the NSA: listening to everybody. This is a pre-Snowdon history of this Orwellian club, and we have signed copies!” – Maarten on GCHQ.

“For some this might be the perfect gift, for others this is a sign the giver might need psychiatric help… Real life horror stories.” – Maarten on The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers.

Historical Fiction

Ebook available of Gates of Fire and The Miniaturist.

“It’s set in Amsterdam in the 17th century, it looks gorgeous, and Pleun has read (and loved) it.  No other reasons needed to buy it!” – ABC Amsterdam’s Historical Fiction buyer PeterL on The Miniaturist.

Ebook available for The Complete Tales & Poems of Edgar Allan Poe.

“Just the right side of tacky, with that floral cover, but this complete works of Poe is truly a gift any Steampunk adept will love.” – ABC Amsterdam’s Horror buyer PeterL on The Complete Tales & Poems of Edgar Allan Poe.

“Also a beautiful gift edition, with place-ribbon!  This is very obviously a Book, with silver-edged pages and everything.  E-readers, eat your heart out!” – PeterL on H. P. Lovecraft: The Complete Fiction.
