Description When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman’s severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. There are four people from his past who he thinks could be responsible – and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike is increasingly sure is not the perpetrator, he and Robin take matters into their own hands, and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them… Career of Evil is the third in the highly acclaimed series featuring private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott. A fiendishly clever mystery with unexpected twists around every corner, it is also a gripping story of a man and a woman at a crossroads in their personal and professional lives. Cormoran Strike is back, with his assistant Robin Ellacott, in a mystery based around soldiers returning from war.
Career of Evil - Staff Choice by Sophie Great series about private detective Cormoran Strike and his resilient secretary/partner-in-detecting Robin. Galbraith/Rowling knows how to tell a story and can effectively characterize someone with a single observation. I was genuinely flummoxed at the end of Career of Evil, with the great reveal (‘oh! it’s YOU!’), and usually I can see them coming from a little ways off! I also really enjoy the bond that grows between Cormoran and Robin throughout the books. They get better with each instalment.

„I choose to steel what you choose to show
And you know I will not apologize –
You're mine for the taking.
I'm making a career of evil...“
This is the third installment in a series of novels about Cormoran Strike, private detective and ex member of Special Investigation Branch, and his curious secretary Robin Ellacott.
From the mere title till some essential facts, entire novel can also be considered as an hommage to Blue Öyster Cult, seventies rock band.
“He had a wonderful plan. Nobody knew. Nobody suspected. And he had something very special waiting for him in the fridge at home.”
There are few moments in life when is not good to be esteemed because of his succes, especially when you're earning your money from headlines and public opinion. As well as Strike might have known this, he had to retake a lesson.
„ – for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death –„
The most expected day in a girl's life turns to be a sliding ground for Robin and her fiancé Matthew. What once seemed to be passion, is know extinguished by mere mention of her boss name, especially when Matthew's friends began asking about Strike. And there is also a fact that Robin's salary is silly compared to the incomes of their friends. Those of you hwo already had read the first two books in the series are familiar with the effort of an author not to be focused only on main case, but also on private sphere of characters. I must admitt that for me it didn't fitted into the plot, and I was a step from giving up all the novels, only because of that. According to this one, all previous event were like appetizer for this case.
Robin has only two months left to her wedding and gifts are even coming to Denmark Street where she works with Strike. But you can't never be so happy at becoming severed leg gifted...
“The leg was smooth, slender and pale, and she had grazed it with her finger as she pulled its packaging open, felt the cold rubbery texture of the skin.”
At the begining Strike was slightly appalled by facing that weird evidence of cruelty. But as soon as he saw the message besides the leg containing the lyrics from “Mistress of the Salmon Salt” by Blue Öyster Cult, his past began the creepy humming in his head.
The silly thing is that Strike during his life have met even four people that could have sent a dismembered body part.
Terence “Digger” Malley, the first suspect, had cut off human's penis and sent it to someone. Strike had him to jail according to some drug ring. I will reveal a bit for you... Terence was soon ruled out from Strike's suspects list because he couldn't have known about the lyrics besides severed leg.
At the begining Strike had spoken grudgingly about suspects. So we're becoming to know that Donald Laing was a member of King's Own Royal Borderers. Described by Strike as an animal, whom he got life for something he shouldn't have been investigating. He got off on the original charge.
Even more grudgingly speaks Strike about Noel Brockbank called Desert Rat. His statement that Noel wasn't right in the head, drives Robin crazy.
„Even in the thumbnail version, Robin could make out an arch of curly script of set above the dark triangle of pubic hair. The words Mistress of were clearly legible.“
Jeff Whittaker is a person which name mens something to everyone hwo had ever googled Cormoran Strike, and for Robin being his secretary it was a matter of fact. Jeff was second, much younger husband of Leda, Strike's mother. She had died of an overdose and he had been accused of her murder.
The fact that Whittaker once upon quoted a verse from „Mistress of the Salmon Salt“ by Blue Öyster Cult in front of him, which was also tattooed on Leda's body, is enough reason for Strike to stubbornly persecute Whittaker.
„Even to know how they looked at the moment of death was an intimacy way past anything two living bodies could experience.“
As time goes by, Strike has plenty unpleast things waiting for him. The number of his clients reduced to just two of them because severed leg had become headline news number one.
Forensic report revealed that the first victim was a woman aged between mid-teens and and mid-twenties and that she was dead when it was cut off – but not long dead, looking at the clotting – and it was kept in a freezer. And the killer has no intention to stop!
Robin has also dug out a unpleasant letter adressed adressed to Strike by the victim. It turns out that she had been suffering from body integrity identity disorder. Therefore, she'd thought that Strike himself cut his leg off and wanted to massage his stump and use her as a living crutch. Would Strike solve the case just to return his old fame or to save Robin which the killer intended on dismember next?
For me, this book was really stunning. Until I've read it, the first one was my favorite. Honestly, the second had a good plot idea wich was not elaborated good enough so that I can completely enjoy it. And as I already have said before, the relationship between main characters put the main case into background. The third one kept Strike and Robin in focus, but it went hand by hand with main case. This time Robin also has interests to find a killer, because of some event from her own past.
You will also be given some chapters which are like insights into killer's mind. This installment definitely deals with the most serious subjects so far, such as rape and sociopathy.
Knowing hwo the killer was didn't left me so startled, because the suspicions were equally divided into three suspects. What left me speechless, is how far the killer had gone in his planning. Although the case had been solved, there are things that will make the fourth book even better. Can't wait!
„The very first time he'd killed had been like that: a simple question of seizing the moment. He remembered it in snapshots, like a slideshow, because it had been thrilling and new. That was before he had honed it to an art, before he had started playing it like the game it was.“
