Description A heart-warming, funny and touching novel that is taking the world by storm! Hendrik Groen is 83¼ years old and he has decided that it is time to make something of his life in a care home. When he recruits some similarly young-at-heart friends to join his 'Old But Not Dead Club', Hendrik proves that love can blossom, rules can be broken and fun is within reach, even at their age.
The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen 83 1/4 Years Old - Staff Choice by Simone What a delightful read! Hendrik Groen is a friendly, headstrong, down-to-earth man, who lives in a home for the elderly. In his diary he describes the trials and tribulations he and his fellow 'inmates' experience on a daily basis. When he is told something is "against the regulations" he demands to see the regulation book, and will hire a lawyer when they refuse him! He accidentally kills the goldfish and tries his best to avoid suspicion. Hendrik and five other residents start up the "Old-But-Not-Dead" Club, and organize special outings to escape the confines of the home. Well-written, funny, sad, realistic and confrontational, this book is a must-read!
The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, 83 1/4 Years Old - Staff Choice by Sophie I would be in fits of giggles one moment and then think “oh you poor dear” on the next page. This old pensioner’s diary paints a very recognizable slice of Dutch society (one we will all be a part of sooner or later). I hope I’m half as feisty and determined as Hendrik to enjoy every day that’s given me.
The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, 83 1/4 Years Old - Customer Choice by Darice de Cuba As an expat living for more than 15 years in The Netherlands, I still don't get Dutch humor. Hendrik Groens dark sarcastic humor is the first one I find funny. Tragic, yes, but funny. It's a real life fiction about daily life of a geriatric man in his 80's living in home for the elderly. The book is spot on about how life is, politics and just people in general. Pure dark comedy goodness.
