Twilight Party Recap

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

twilight_saga_collectionWith The Twilight Saga: New Moon breaking box office records at the cinemas, book lovers are also catching the fever and re-discovering the books that inspired the films.  And the American Book Center is in the thick of things, as usual!

On Friday the 13th of November – an appropriate evening, don’t you think? - ABC hosted a party for Twilight fans at our Amsterdam cultural center, the ABC Treehouse.  Vampire bitten cupcakes by Alice in Cakeland and some delectable Swamp Juice were big hits, as was the quiz designed for the hard-core fans.

Congratulations to the first place winner of the short film contest: Billie Savage, for his classics-inspired film “Vampire”. Billie and the other winners received personal feedback and advice from Mr. Horror himself (Jan Doense), and all our winners received prizes and gifts, thanks to our sponsors at Independent Films and Hachette Publications.

Thanks go to all – especially our volunteers – for making the night a chilling success! If you want to catch the vampire fever, you can find the entire series at the American Book Center.  Enjoy the pictures below from the night!

Celebrate the continuation of the Twilight Saga and the release of the New Moon movie with The American Book Center at our Twilight Party!

Come dressed as you would go to the Prom or Bellaʼs Birthday. It’ll be like catching a glimpse of how it would feel to be Bella on her Birthday (minus the fact that a vampire gets tasty for your blood, we hope).

There will be cake for our guests and during the night you can win prizes and receive gifts!

Twilight.

Does it really need any more introductions?

Well, alright then, this evening the highly anticipated Twilight has hit the Dutch theaters.  It stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, and is directed by Catherine Hardwicke (of Thirteen fame).  The movie is of course based on the hugely popular first book in the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer.

Click here if you want a chance at winning a movie poster and the Twilight companion book.

Another weekly round-up of newsworthy literary tidbits!

  • Interview!  If you’re thinking of trying Gargoyle, one of the big hypes across the pond, here’s an interview with the author.  I like the way he talks about his characters (for his next book):  “They’ve still not consented to be the main character.  I’m still waiting for their approval, but I’ve got my fingers crossed, I’m hoping.”
  • Unbelievably, there’s no award to post about!  I probably didn’t search hard enough.  No matter, I think I’m going to celebrate this momentous occasion by creating the Sophie Sound of Silence Award, to be given every first week in September to the book I’ve finished most recently.  The prize consists of a completely unnecessary mention in the Bookbits.  Congratulations to Friday’s Child by Georgette Heyer for winning the inaugural award!

Bookbits for February 11th, 2008

  • Warcraft Sunwell TrilogyHere’s a thought: video games are the future of books. I’m an avid World of Warcraft player and I think he has a very valid point. Not that he mentions WoW, but many games are as dependent on storyline as on graphics and playability. What say you?
  • TwilightAll you Stephenie Meyer fans (I’m in the process of joining you): Breaking Dawn, the fourth installment of the Twilight series , will be out in stores on August 2nd. Also, a movie of Twilight, the first part, is being shot as we speak. It stars Kristen Stewart (Panic Room, Into the Wild, Jumper) as Isabella and Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies) as Edward, and should reach this country in January 2009.
  • Confessions of a ShopaholicSpeaking of adaptations, in October Confessions of a Shopaholic (also known as The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic) should hit movie theaters here, with Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy in the leads. I’m sure that’ll thrill the legion of Sophie Kinsella fans. By the way, did you know that Sophie Kinsella is actually a pseudonym? She’s really called Madeleine Wickham, and she has also written books under that name.
