This is publishing anno 2012: a book skyrockets to the number one spot on the New York Times Bestseller list, without the backing of a major publisher, and without even being widely available in book stores. E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey, and its two sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, were published by a tiny house in Australia, making global distribution difficult and expensive. The bulk of the sales of this Twilight-inspired erotic romance were of the e-books, bolstered by word of mouth praise that referred to “THE book.” Once this buzz reached the mainstream media, interest in the series was phenomenal, leading to Random House quickly nabbing E.L. James and rushing out paperback editions of all three books. A boxed set of all three novels will be in our stores later this month. We’re reading them and finding them utterly compelling – a wonderful, guilty pleasure.
