ABC Meets: Kat von D

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

An Exclusive ABC Event in Co-Operation with Hotel V

People can’t get enough of Kat Von D, the charismatic star of TLC’s LA Ink and one of the world’s most sought-after tattoo artists. In 2009 she released her first book High Voltage Tattoo, which became an immediate New York Times bestseller.

In her gorgeous new book, The Tattoo Chronicles, Kat offers an intimate look at a pivotal year in her personal and professional life through an illustrated diary that begins in spring 2008 and ends in summer 2009.

Visually stunning and unique in its design from page to page, The Tattoo Chronicles is jam-packed with tons of Kat’s images, from sketches of her tattoos to the finished works, and candid shots of friends, family, and her many unusual personal collections—all photographed by Kat herself. Fans will love reading about her array of clients from all walks of life, including Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, Dave Navarro, and members of Metallica, Green Day, Kings of Leon, and the Eagles as much as they will love seeing new photographs of Kat that were taken specifically for the book.

ABC is thrilled to announce Kat von D will be signing her new book at ABC Amsterdam on Tuesday November 30th, from 6pm to 8pm. Interest in this event is high: to make sure that you can attend, sign up here.

(Our usual book siging rule  rule applies: Please do not present anything other than a copy of The Tattoo Chronicles for signing. ONLY the book will be signed. No scraps of paper, items of clothing,  posters, or body parts, no matter how attractive, will be autographed.)

Updated info Nov 23rd:  You don’t need to bring your invitation email, but DO bring your book!  We’re expecting a lot of people (latest count lies around 400) so be sure you SIGN UP (see above).  The event starts at 18.00 but you might want to think about lining up earlier than that; first come first served!

ABC Meets: Tattooist Henk Schiffmacher

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Henk ‘Panky’ Schiffmacher is a painter, writer, collector, world traveler… but he’s best known as Holland’s most famous tattoo-artist. (So famous that he’s the answer to a question in the Dutch edition of Trivial Pursuit!)

He is internationally recognized as one of the best around. The Encyclopedia for the Art and History of Tattooing is Schiffmacher’s phenomenal magnum opus, which will be published on May 15th.

This 500-page full-color lexicon reveals the rich history and meaning of the tattoo, the ermine-lined cloak of the working classes. An absolute must-have for any tattoo collector!

The Encyclopedia for the Art and History of Tattooing is like  the fallen bookcase in Henk’s head,  full of facts, technical terms, anecdotes, tall stories and quirky details, and is filled with an endless parade of heroes and villains from the tattoo world.

Henk’s head has now been alphabetically ordered in a sumptuous book full of illustrations. Now, at last, the art of the tattoo has the encyclopedia it has always deserved.

The great man will be signing the English-language edition of his new book, Encyclopedia for The Art and History of Tattooing, on Saturday May 15, at 15:00 in our Amsterdam store.

It promises to be one of our most interesting book launches ever.

Date: Saturday May 15
Time: 3pm
Place: The American Book Center, Amsterdam

tatoo.jpgWhat do Kurt Vonnegut, Sylvia Plath, Ernest Hemingway and the Bible have in common? They’re among body art’s most quoted. (I’ll bet a book comes out of this website in the future. I’d buy it! In the meantime, you might like this one. ) Which quote would you want to have inked into your skin? How about:

“Would you kill him in his bed? Thrust a dagger through his head? I would not, could not, kill the King. I could not do that evil thing. I would not wed this girl, you see. Now get her to a nunnery.” From Green Eggs and Hamlet and other delightful merged books.

If you bought a copy of the scanimation bestseller Gallop, and have had the urge to take it apart to see how it works, try this.
