Spotlight on: the Brain/Gut connection

Friday, June 7th, 2013

Our Sigrid at ABC Amsterdam noticed that a few new titles have come out recently about the brain/gut connection.

“The what?” I hear you think, much like I did when she mailed me about them.  I’ll let Michael Pollan enlighten you with his NY Times article on the subject, published last month.  Fascinating, right?  And slightly nauseating, too, perhaps.  ;-)

Sigrid has grouped the new titles on this subject together with the classics in the Health section at ABC Amsterdam.  At ABC The Hague you can  find them in the Health or Science section.  Please be sure to contact your ABC of choice for an exact stock check.

  • And finally, booksellers, from all angles. We do like to think this is what we do, although sadly/thankfully* not quite so half-dressed. (*cross out whatever is inapplicable here)

Many thanks to Tom, Rick, Jitse, PeterL and Sigrid for several of the above links!  If you have any book-related news links you want to share, mail blog@abc.nl.

  • Terrible, terrible news: Iain Banks has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.  Apparently he has been given less than a year to live.  Let’s hope he’s one of those rare individuals that defies medical science and will live and write for many a year to come!
  • In which Amazon buys something else most of us loved for the precise fact that it was independent: Goodreads “joins the Amazon family”.  JeroenW and I are rather less than ecstatic, although apparently Goodreads will remain independent.  Let’s hope so.

Many thanks to Tom, JeroenW, Sigrid, Steven and Joke for several of the above links!  If you have any book-related news links you want to share, mail blog@abc.nl.

  • Robert Langdon returns! On May 14th, to be exact, when Dan Brown’s newest thriller Inferno hits the shelves.
  • P. G. Wodehouse fans (and I’m sure you are legion): my apologies.  I am dreadfully tardy with the news that the Blandings books has been turned into a BBC 6-parter.  The first two episodes have aired already, but you can still catch the next four every Saturday (and see the iPlayer app to catch up).  Thanks to Sigrid for the link, which was well in advance; I’ve just been lagging!
  • Quiz! The Guardian commemorates the inauguration of Barack Obama with an American Presidents in Literature quiz.  I scored a paltry 7/15 and earned the stinging Guardian judgement of “No, you can’t. You make W look like Umberto Eco.” Ouch!
