Saw the Movie? Read the Book!

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

These May movies are based on books:

Jurassic Park 3D (the 3D release of the 1993 box office smash hit)

is still based on the novel Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton (iconic cover by the amazing Chip Kidd).

Hannah Arendt is a biographical film about the German Jewish philosopher. It isn’t based on any specific book,

but there are quite a few books about her, the times she lived in and her work, like The Portable Hannah Arendt.

Two Mothers is based on the short story The Grandmothers by Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing.

The Great Gatsby is based on the classic written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  If you haven’t read it yet, do!  Glorious use of language.  :-)

The Company You Keep is based on the novel with the same title by Neil Gordon.

L’Ecume des Jours is based on the French novel with the same title by Boris Vian.

It has been translated to English with the title Froth on the Daydream.

Epic is based on the novel The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs by William Joyce

(the same man who also wrote The Rise of the Guardians books).

Midnight’s Children is based on the modern classic by Salman Rushdie (originally scheduled for March).

ABC’s Favorite Reads of 2012, part Blogmistress

Monday, December 24th, 2012

Well, here we are, the last post of ABC’s Favorite Reads of 2012!  I hope you have enjoyed our recommendations – they have all been made with passion and a lot of pleasant memories of the joy that each book has brought us.

Part Blogmistress is traditionally reserved for those of us that work on this blog. Sadly you won’t find Hayley’s Top 5 here anymore though, since she left us earlier this year (she does write for us now and again though!).  Still, Ester and myself (Sophie) are trying to fill the void as best we can!  Ester has taken over Tweeting duties, and besides prettying up your feed there with her calendar model shoots she also buys the books for the Manga/Graphic Novels, Film & TV, Animals/Nature, Horror and Philosophy sections, and the merchandise and calendars, in The Hague.  I have worked on this blog since the beginning, and I write the monthly News Mailings now.  I also buy the books for the Romance, Military, Military Fiction, Crafts and Audio Books sections in The Hague.

We would love to hear about your favorite reads of 2012, too. Please mail blog@abc.nl with your choices and a picture of yourself (optional). We will post your list at the beginning of the new year and send you an ABC Gift Certificate (so don’t forget to include your home address with your list!).

All of us at ABC hope you have a wonderful holiday this week!

ABC’s Favorite Reads of 2012, part I

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Hooray!  It’s time for my favorite series of posts: ABC’s Favorite Reads!

That’s right, the ABC Staff is about to reveal their favorite books read in 2012!  There will be new titles, old titles, magazines, Dutch books, games, fiction, non fiction, anything and everything we read and liked in 2012. We are as diverse as our individual choices and that is what makes ABC unique!

Barry, Renate and Karin start us off. Barry is one of ABC The Hague’s most familiar faces and the History, Current Affairs, Political Science and Travel Literature buyer there.  Renate is ABC Amsterdam’s Fiction, Poetry and Memoirs buyer.  And Karin is our Marketing Director.

We would love to hear about your favorite reads of 2012, too. Please mail blog@abc.nl with your choices and a picture of yourself (optional). We will post your list at the beginning of the new year and send you an ABC Gift Certificate (so don’t forget to include your home address with your list!).

Gift Ideas: Philosophy, Science, Business, Social Science

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Let us be your personal shoppers!

ABC’s booksellers don’t just sell books: as well as being voracious readers, almost all ABC staff members are personally responsible for buying the books for one or more sections in the stores. That means you’ll always find someone who can put exactly the right book in your hands when you need it. We asked our buyers for their tips for the best gifts for the upcoming holiday season, and they came up with some great ones: new books, classic books, magazines, games, merchandise, and stationery.

Today you’ll find gift ideas for Philosophy, Business, Science, and Social Science as supplied by Ester, Tom, Sigrid, Jouke, Agnes, Martijn, Jeroen and Femke.

Even more gift ideas can be found here and here!
