Tips for Entertaining Your Kids this Summer

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012

The kids in the South have already started their summer holidays, and those in the Middle and North of the Netherlands are following suit this week and next.  Undoubtedly, many of you will be going away for a well-deserved vacation.  To keep that vacation relaxing and fun, here are some tips for child-friendly entertainment!

Usborne is a well-loved publisher of children’s books, and they also have some absolutely great activity card sets.  How about 100 Things for Little Children to do On a Train, 50 Things to do on a Journey, or 100 Games to Play on Holiday?  For the littlest ones we have 50 Things to do with Your Baby, both for the 0 – 6 months range and the 6 – 12 month range, as well as 50 Things to do with Your Toddler.  Some other excellent suggestions are Animal Doodles, 50 Secret Codes, and 50 Optical Illusions.

For the slightly older children, consider one of the Story Cubes sets, or, in the same vein, Talking Dice.  These consist of sets of dice with simple pictures on each of their sides.  Throw them, and create a story with whatever pictures come up.  And with 9 dice with 6 sides each, that’s 9!x6! = 261273600 possible combinations per set, if our math is right.  Bring plenty of paper and pens to capture the stories!

If you’re blessed with kids who love to make things, there are plenty of craft books around, too.  The Kids’ Crafternoon books are a good start, from sewing to papercraft, but there are also titles like Knitting for Children, for example, and general craft books like Made to Play, Handy Dad, or The Crafty Kid

Teenagers might be a bit more difficult to please – but we’re pretty sure they can’t resist books like Wreck This Journal, Finish This Book, or The Guerilla Art Kit, all by Keri Smith.

Come browse through our Crafts, Paper Engineering, Art and Children’s Book sections before you head off to your holiday!

Spotlight on… Classic Crime and Merchandise

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Since both ABC stores are so full of nooks and crannies, and each and every one of us on the floor buys books for at least one section, we are planning to show you some of what we consider our treasures here more often. We know how easy it can become to head straight to your favorite section, and we want to show you there is so much more to be found!  Jouke gave us a head-start with his Cozy Mysteries Corner, and now Jilles and Renate, our Fiction buyers at Amsterdam (when they’re not reading on the job), have taken up the gauntlet…

Get your classic Penguin summer bag and make all your book loving friends jealous! Have a great summer (because it *will* be summer this year, we can feel it in our bones)!

June will be ‘de maand van het spannende boek‘ (the month of the thrilling book) in the Netherlands. We in the fiction department are making ourselves ready for some literary blood and guts with both these three gorgeous hardcovers for everybody who wants to know about Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion Watson, and these classic noirs that have been reissued in beautiful editions. If your relationship is boring you, get your tension and excitement here… Happy reading!

Shown in the bottom picture are: The Maltese Falcon – Dashiell Hammett, American Noir: 11 Classic Crime Novels of the 1930s, 40s & 50s – edited by Robert Polito, Blood on the Mink – Robert Silverberg, Double Indemnity – James M. Cain, The Big Sleep – Raymond Chandler, and David Goodis, Five Noir Novels of the 1940s and 50s – David Goodis.

This Just In: Non-Book Items

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Just in time for Thanksgiving, here a few of the non-book items we sell (and yes, you get a discount on these as well!):

The Bobino Slim Pen

With a thickness of only 4mm (1/8 inch”) it will be the thinnest pen you’ve ever seen and great for use in your notebook or diary/agenda. With the possibility to attach the pen with a sticky strip, you will never be without a pen anymore.

The Thumb Thing

It’s a neat little plastic ring you put around your thumb to keep the book open on the pages you’re reading without much hassle. At our display you can check what size of four available is best for you. Don’t see your favorite color in your size? Ask us to see what we can do for you.

The Emotion Gallery

Real 3D cards/bookmarks you can use as a ruler (cm and inches) as well. Check out our rotating display to see how cute an elephant can scratch his behind or how giraffes enjoy their leaves. And if you don’t see the one you want, just ask us to check if we can order your favorite.

Angry Birds

Who doesn’t know the little angry birds desperately seeking their eggs the green pigs have stolen? Well, we do and we thought it would be nice to be able to play with them in real life. Hence these cute soft versions for you to buy and cuddle with. And when you hug them strong enough they will even make some noises.

Pop! Vinyl Bobble Heads

If you want to see your favorite singer, actor, or fictional/movie character you’ve come to the right place. These bobble head dolls are waiting for their fans!

ABC Meets: Sheridan Simove

Friday, November 4th, 2011

The relentless, scandalous, maverick inventor Sheridan (a.k.a. Shed) Simove is a performer, author and novelty gift entrepreneur. (Those marvelously whacky sound machines on sale in our stores are a Shed creation.)

Shed is an expert in IDEAS and can help you make your ideas happen. Shed believes that “when an idea pops into your head, it can send you on amazing adventures – if you follow the idea through…”. Shed’s passion is also to tackle things that have never been done before – and his own ideas can be for anything, ranging from ‘adult sweets’, TV shows, gifts, or his own currency. These true-life stories – plus his tips for how to make anything you desire come to life – feature in his books, performances and corporate speeches…

On Saturday December 3 , 2011 Sheridan Simove will be at ABC Amsterdam all day, just for you. He’ll be bringing all of his inventions with him for you to play with and wonder at, (or tut at – they’re that kind of invention). Some of these object have never seen before , including prototypes of his latest ideas.

It will be a grand day of show & tell, Q&A and amazing ideas. Sheridan will of course also be signing his books Ideas Man, and What Every Man Thinks about Apart from Sex.

In addition, Shed will be giving an inspiring and hugely entertaining talk at the Hotel V on Friday December 2 , 2011 at 8pm on ‘Creativity, Ideas and How To Make Anything You Desire Actually Happen’. You don’t want to miss his unique, informative and hilarious presentation! Reservations can be made via the Hotel V website. See their complete events agenda here.
