ABC Meets: Knitter Nancy Marchant

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

knittingbriocheOn Saturday, February 20th, knitter extraordinaire Nancy Marchant will launch her book Knitting Brioche: The Essential Guide to the Brioche Stitch at the ABC in Amsterdam.

Nancy Marchant has created an entire website about this stitch, right here, and, if you’re a knitter, I can highly recommend not going there, as you will find yourself seduced by all those fabulous color combinations.  Knitters being what they are, you’ll want to start a pattern with that brioche stitch straight away!

Come here the expert speak about it in person.  The event starts at 15.00 hrs.

Bring your stash so you can get started on one of these on your way home (trying to resist the siren call of that Brioche Pullover myself).

ABC’s Favorite Books of 2009, part Blogmistress

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

BookstackxmastreeIs it really December 24th already?  Unbelievable.  And accidentally well-timed, too, since there are only two top 5s left in our bag full of recommendations.  So, without further ado, here are Hayley and my favorites of the past year.  We hope you enjoyed reading about what everyone at ABC loved this past year – and maybe we gave you some tips to check out, too!

Which still reminds me: we would love to know what your 5 favorite reads of the past year were (they don’t have to be books published in 2009).  Please send them to blog@abc.nl (it’s still not too late!)(really!), and please include your mailing address so we can send you an ABC gift voucher as our thank you.

Finally, happy holidays from all of us here at ABC!  Wherever you’re spending them, we hope they will be days filled with love, warmth and books.

Book Learnin: Our irregular round-up of random book stuff

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Blimey. You cut one day of work a week and suddenly you have no time at all to blog! I have been busy keeping the Amsterdam Children’s section tidy (there’s a full day’s work right there!) compiling ABC’s monthly e-mail, and writing our book reviews in The Xpat Journal. All lovely jobs which I enjoy very much (well apart from the tidying) but I have missed Do You Read Me?

Here are just a few of the great tips and links sent to the blog mistresses in my absence.

1. One of Jitse’s all time favorite sites is Strangemaps, a blog devoted to weird and awkward maps. One of the most recent entries deals with a map of the land of books.  The map is in German, and features a lot witty wordplay - thankfully, explained in the comments for those of us who don’t do German.

2. Sophie is trying very hard not to buy Boutique Knits – she’s pillaged enough of her knitting books in the Crafts section as it is!

3. Chronicle Books is a publisher of what I like to think of as Book Candy: Irresistable, attractive, arty, creative, fun books on all sorts of subjects in all sorts of sizes. We’d love to be in charge of sorting through their mail bag!

4. Femke found this video of Elizabeth Gilbert  (author of Eat, Pray, Love) talking about creativity on the ever wonderful TED website.

5. And finally, one from me: books that appear to be figments of a funny photoshopper’s  imagination…. but are actually real. We’ve even had a few of them in stock in our stores! Click on the the cover on the right if you don’t believe me.

ABC’s Favorite Books of 2008 (Blogmistress edition)

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

And at last, the final post with our favorite books…

It’s the one you’ve been waiting for *cough* – the Blogmistress post, where Hayley and I tell you what we loved this past year.  And since we’re such a wordy twosome, we needed a whole post for just the pair of us.  Sigh.

Anyhoo, I hope you enjoy our favorites like you enjoyed those of our colleagues.  After the jump, naturally (we love a bit of suspense).

PS.  It’s not like there’s not been newsworthy Bookbits in the last two or three weeks, I’ve just not had time to sift through them all!  I’m hoping I’ll get some posted this week or early next… (more…)
