Ready for a new entry in ABC’s Favorite Reads of 2012 series? There will be new titles, old titles, magazines, Dutch books, games, fiction, non fiction, anything and everything we read and liked in 2012. We are as diverse as our individual choices and that is what makes ABC unique!
Part V features Shirley, Simone and Aviva. Shirley is Amsterdam’s buyer for the Children’s Books section, and helps oversee the ABC Treehouse there. Simone is one of ABC The Hague’s store managers, and buys the books for the Fiction, Cookbooks and stationery sections. Aviva is Amsterdam’s buyer for the Travel, Erotica and Reference sections.

Ready for a new entry in ABC’s Favorite Reads of 2012 series? There will be new titles, old titles, magazines, Dutch books, games, fiction, non fiction, anything and everything we read and liked in 2012. We are as diverse as our individual choices and that is what makes ABC unique!
Part IV features JeroenW, Tom and Lynn. JeroenW is The Hague’s Science Fiction & Fantasy and Film & TV Tie-Ins buyer, and scarily good at accents. Tom is The Hague’s buyer for the Travel, Biography, Science, Poetry, Local Interest, Languages and Spanish Books sections, and whistles while he works. Lynn is ABC’s owner, driving force, and our Ruby Jubilee Girl this year. Without Lynn there would be no ABC, it’s as simple as that!

Part III features PeterL, Pleun and Jilles. PeterL is Amsterdam’s buyer for the Gay & Lesbian, Horror, Young Adult and Historical Fiction sections. Pleun buys the books for the Crime, Cooking, Weddings & Entertaining and Crafts sections in Amsterdam, and is also the trainer of our newbies (awwwww). Last, but definitely not least, Jilles is the Amsterdam Fiction buyer. And regular Staff Reviewer on this blog, too!

ABC’s booksellers don’t just sell books: as well as being voracious readers, almost all ABC staff members are personally responsible for buying the books for one or more sections in the stores. That means you’ll always find someone who can put exactly the right book in your hands when you need it. We asked our buyers for their tips for the best gifts for the upcoming holiday season, and they came up with some great ones: new books, classic books, magazines, games, merchandise, and stationery.

Awards! The 2013 Arthur C. Clarke Award went to Chris Beckett for Dark Eden. See the nominees (as well as the other four big SF/Fantasy award nominees) here. This year’s Agatha Award (for traditional mysteries) for Best Novel went to Louise Penny’s The Beautiful Mystery (Inspector Gamache #8). Click here for the rest of the category winners. Another award with many delicious categories is the James Beard Foundation Award, featuring all manner of cookbooks (oh, yeah!). Cookbook of the Year went to Gran Cocina Latina: The Food of Latin America by Maricel E. Presilla.
The ever-insightful Lionel Shriver writes a strong essay about the West’s obsession with body size. Time to pick up her newest, Big Brother (which continues the essay’s theme), then! Speaking of essays-tying-in-with-new-novels, William Sutcliffe explains how a visit to the West Bank Wall changed his new novel.
