Customize your life!: The Urban Culture Event

Urban Culture goes wide

Since The American Book Center’s Custom Kicks event in 2008 Urban Culture has grown beyond sneakers and street art to catch the attention of art & design admirers, students, stylists, photographers, and the arts & crafts movement.

Breaking out of the passivity of chain-store shopping, the do-it-yourself movement has spread across America, invaded England, and is landing with both feet at the American Book Center in Amsterdam.

Urbanites from all walks of life are trolling the shelves for information on Sneaker Design, the Handmade Movement and Do-It-Yourself books of all kinds.  Why wear a t-shirt sporting someone else’s logo, when you can design your own?  Customized sneakers, t-shirts, and winter scarves: what do they all have in common?  They are made or re-made by an independent artist – or by you!

Creativity is the order of the day – and on June 27th some of the artists and urbanites driving the movement will share their secrets and offer hands-on workshops. Come to The American Book Center’s Urban Culture Event …and get creative!

Topical Tips: Sneakers

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Custom KicksYou can find general bestseller lists of fiction and non-fiction everywhere these days.  That is why we have decided to come up with weekly Topical Tips, highlighting five books about any imaginable subject that is in the news right now. In honor of the release of Custom Kicks (How to Pimp Your Footwear) on Saturday, June 28th, we present you with 5 books featuring sneakers:

  1. Sneakers: The Complete Collector’s Guide.  This encyclopedia with over 500 photos of sneakers worldwide and featuring over 180 sneaker designs is a must for anyone interested in sneaker culture or collection.
  2. SneakersSneakers.  Similar title, different book!  It charts the history of the sneaker, from early canvas shoes to the fashion statements they are today.  It includes interviews with designers and fans, and also features loads of pictures.
  3. Where’d You Get Those? New York City’s Sneaker Culture 1960 – 1987.  This book combines autobiography, oral history, vintage ads and lots of photos as it looks back on how graffiti artists, rappers, and basketball players made the sneaker a cultural icon.
  4. Pitch Invasion: Adidas, Puma, and the Making of Modern Sport.  Also known as Sneaker Wars: The Enemy Brothers Who Founded Adidas and Puma and the Family Feud That Forever Changed the Business of Sports.  Says it all, really, doesn’t it?  Gives an overview of the Dassler brothers who set up competing sneaker businesses, and how they helped make sports and sports labels the billion dollar industry they are today.
  5. And of course, a work of fiction featuring perhaps the best-known sneaker of them all: The Lord of the Rings.  “No food, no rest, nothing for Sméagol,” said Gollum.  “He’s a sneak.”
