Patrick Modiano wins the Nobel Prize for Literature 2014

Thursday, October 9th, 2014

Congratulations to French author Patrick Modiano for winning this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature!

“For the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation.” – the Nobel Prize jury

Modiano won the Prix Goncourt, France’s most prestigious literary prize, in 1978 for Rue des boutiques obscures (English title: Missing Person).  Some other works of his that have been translated into English thus far are Dora Bruder (The Search Warrant), Catherine Certitude (illustrated by Sempé!) and Voyage de noces (Honeymoon).  Undoubtedly more will be (re-)published with this happy news!

Bookbits for September 11th, 2014

  • I love the responses to this reader survey The Guardian did, about “hearing” what you’re reading.  I always hear the book in my head, loud and clear.  I’ve also found I very much “read” commas and exclamation marks and ALL CAPS.  How about you?

ABC named Best Bookshop in the World!

Friday, March 28th, 2014

In case you missed it earlier in the week

International lifestyle magazine Monocle has named ABC the Best Bookshop in the World in their inaugural Top 25 Retail Awards!

Monocle’s list features stores and people from all across the globe in such categories as Best Local Bistro Chain, Top Art-Meets-Retail Concept, and Best Food Hall.  And right there, on nr. 12, under the heading Best Bookshop, it’s us!  (If you prefer moving pictures, check out the slideshow film here.)

As you can imagine, we’re thrilled to pieces to be named nr. 1, and in such a prestigious magazine, too.  We were already very honored to feature as one of the Page Turners in their Small Business supplement at the end of last year, and this is an unexpected and huge bonus.  :-)  Monocle’s April issue (#72) is now in stock in both ABCs.

  • R. I. P. Both Elmore Leonard and Seamus Heaney died in the past month.  Leonard is probably best known for Get Shorty, while Nobel Laureate Heaney almost single-handedly revived interest in Beowulf with his seminal translation – as well as writing a bit of poetry on his own…  I’m sure I’m missing a few more greats who passed away during my holiday, but these two stood out.

This Bookbits was written by Sophie and Ester. We love everything fun, quirky and literary, so be sure to contact us if you find anything we can share here.
