Gift Ideas: Consciousness, Religion, Self-Help, Body/Mind/Spirit

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

Let us be your personal shoppers!

ABC’s booksellers don’t just sell books: as well as being voracious readers, almost all ABC staff members are personally responsible for buying the books for one or more sections in the stores. That means you’ll always find someone who can put exactly the right book in your hands when you need it. We asked our buyers for their tips for the best gifts for the upcoming holiday season, and they came up with some great ones: new books, classic books, magazines, games, merchandise, and stationery.

Today you’ll find gift ideas for Consciousness, Religion, Self-Help and Body/Mind/Spirit as supplied by Femke, Martijn and Agnes.

Even more gift ideas can be found here and here!

ABC’s Spiritual Book Club Starts New Season

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

This fall we will start our second season of ABC’s Spiritual Book Club!

Every second Sunday of the month, we meet at the ABC Treehouse in Amsterdam from 3pm to 5pm to discuss a title from the American Book Center’s Consciousness section.

Although our discussions are centered around the selected book, the Spiritual Book Club is more than just a book club. Ultimately, it functions as a platform where participants can share ideas, exchange experiences and find inspiration.

Our focus is not on theoretical debates, but on practical Spirituality. “How do I apply these spiritual insights in my own life?” “How can I stay centered in the hectic of every day living?” are questions we address during our discussions. Coming together with other “spiritual seekers” in an ambiance of mutual respect and relaxed openness is what the Spiritual Book Club is all about.

This year we will start our discussions with Neale Donald Walsch’s  Conversations with God, Book 1

Our first meeting will be on Sunday, September 13 2009 in the ABC Treehouse.
The other dates this Fall will be: Sunday October 11, November 8 and December 13.

Pre-season Spiritual Book Club Meeting on Sunday August 30

By way of an introduction to the new season of the Spiritual Book Club, Graham B. – avid ABC ‘top floor’ bookworm, Rebirth practicioner and Spiritual Book Club member – will present a 20 minute ‘homemade road movie’ documenting his recent spiritual odyssey to the United States.

His goal and the basis of this odyssey was to return to Hopi Land as part of the gathering of international tribal elders hold last April, a destination he didn’t make. Instead he adopted a white buffalo called White Spirit, which he now believes was the real reason he was ‘called’.

Graham’s presentation will include information and insights into the fulfillment of a 2000-year old Lakota prophecy, predicting the return of the white buffalo and their significance, and some of the “amazing” synchronous events which indicated (despite his own skepticism!) that he was meant to be there. He will also present a number of important ABC book titles that had a direct influence on his journey.
Attendance is free although donations are welcome and will go towards the sponsorship and upkeep of White Spirit.

Date: August 30 2009
Time: 15-17
Location: ABC Treehouse
Host: Femke Wijdekop

Topical Tips: Miracles

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

This Friday Gary Renard, author of Disappearance of the Universe and teacher of A Course in Miracles is visiting the ABC Treehouse in Amsterdam for a talk, together with his translator Rogier Fentener van Vlissingen, who will be presenting his own book Closing the Circle.  Here are 5 titles somehow connected to miracles:

  1. Miracles by C. S. Lewis.  In case you weren’t aware (as I wasn’t before I started working here), C. S. Lewis wrote many other religious and philosophical texts beside The Chronicles of Narnia.
  2. The Miracle at Speedy Motors by Alexander McCall Smith.  The most recent book of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series to be published in paperback in which Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni is looking for a miracle for a member of his family.
  3. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver.  The crack author tells you that, simply put, you are what you eat.  But then in her prose.
  4. Miracle by Danielle Steel.  Ms. Steel’s 66th novel out of 80 and counting, people!  Three people are thrown together in the wake of a storm, and unlikely friendships are forged…
  5. The Miracle Ball Method: Relieve Your Pain, Reshape Your Body, Reduce Your Stress by Elaine Petrone.  This book(let) comes with two vinyl balls to do the exercises with, but somehow it’s been imprinted in my head as the book that never gets picked up when it’s special ordered.  So, if you do, please be sure you want it and come pick it up.
