ABC’s Favorite Reads of 2012, part III

Friday, December 14th, 2012

Ready for a new entry in ABC’s Favorite Reads of 2012 series? There will be new titles, old titles, magazines, Dutch books, games, fiction, non fiction, anything and everything we read and liked in 2012. We are as diverse as our individual choices and that is what makes ABC unique!

Part III features PeterL, Pleun and Jilles. PeterL is Amsterdam’s buyer for the Gay & Lesbian, Horror, Young Adult and Historical Fiction sections.  Pleun buys the books for the Crime, Cooking, Weddings & Entertaining and Crafts sections in Amsterdam, and is also the trainer of our newbies (awwwww).  Last, but definitely not least, Jilles is the Amsterdam Fiction buyer.  And regular Staff Reviewer on this blog, too!

We would love to hear about your favorite reads of 2012, too. Please mail blog@abc.nl with your choices and a picture of yourself (optional). We will post your list at the beginning of the new year and send you an ABC Gift Certificate (so don’t forget to include your home address with your list!).

Art exhibitions with an ABC touch

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

In December ABC will stage for two very special art exhibitions, both of them very much connected to us.

In The Hague, at the ABC Treehut, ABC colleague Nyjolene will display her artwork in public for the very first time ever.

That’s right, we have a world premiere!  Nyjolene and her friend Soraya will hold a double exhibition that will run for two months.  Based on what we’ve had sneak peeks of, it promises to be a colorful and joyous collection. As they put it themselves, “In ‘First Impressions’ we chose to be free of any rules and to try many different subjects and styles, as opposed to having a set theme. We both love to paint but only this year have really invested in the art. Working up to this exhibition has been a very exciting and satisfying experience.”

More information can be found here.  The ABC Treehut can be found upstairs at ABC The Hague and is open during store hours.

In Amsterdam, the ABC Treehouse will display paintings by Gerard Boersma, whose work often features ABC.

Mr. Boersma observes common people and objects on streets, in stores, public transport and museums, enlarges the scenes and paints them – time finally frozen, busy lives forever captured in a moment.  At first sight the subjects might appear quite ordinary and meaningless, but through Mr. Boersma’s eyes they’re anything but.  It is wonderful to see familiar corners of the store zoomed in on and transformed!

Mr. Boersma’s art will be exhibited for two months starting in December and can be viewed whenever the ABC Treehouse is open for events or courses.  The ABC Treehouse is situated at Voetboogstraat 11, across the square from ABC Amsterdam.

Writers on Demand: AKV|St. Joost Students with Joke Mestdagh

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

ILJT LUESPNELIIEG is an interactive activity and coloring book, with puzzles, stories, games and crazy tasks about legendary trickster Tijl Uilenspiegel (also known as Till Eulenspiegel). The book was created by 24 second-year graphic design students at AKV|St. Joost in ’s Hertogenbosch between August 31st and October 23rd, 2012.

The brief was to make “an art and activity book for small and large children”, using the many stories and images of Tijl Uilenspiegel available in Dutch folklore as a starting point. By investigating and playing with the sources, original images were created and combined into this book. Every student was responsible for designing 8 pages and an original cover. To make it even more fun, accompanying stickers were (screen-)printed.

ILJT LUESPNELIIEG is printed on demand on ABC’s Espresso Book Machines, with a choice of 24 different covers!

Thanks to ‘the scamps’ Stefan, Anna, Titus, Laura, Florian, Wesley, Koen, Anna, Loran-Paul, Amanda, Patrick, Sonja, Kasia, Patricia, Leroy, Evalie, Robin, Sascha, Koen, Inge, Yashar, Linsy, Lou & Pim for braving this adventure.  There were moments when this project was purely madness, but mostly it was unique and great fun!

Gift Ideas: Graphic Novels, Manga, Art, Games

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

Let us be your personal shoppers!

ABC’s booksellers don’t just sell books: as well as being voracious readers, almost all ABC staff members are personally responsible for buying the books for one or more sections in the stores. That means you’ll always find someone who can put exactly the right book in your hands when you need it. We asked our buyers for their tips for the best gifts for the upcoming holiday season, and they came up with some great ones: new books, classic books, magazines, games, merchandise, and stationery.

Today you’ll find gift ideas for Graphic Novels & Comics, Manga, Art and Games as supplied by Ester, Martijn, Jitse and Jouke.

Even more gift ideas can be found here and here!
