Eric Staller to Dazzle Amsterdam on The Night of Books!

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

On The Night of Books, Friday March 20th American artist Eric Staller will appear at 7pm outside The American Book Center on The Spui. He will give a reading from his book Out of My Mind and rouse the city with his unique mobile artworks Bubbleheads and Lightmobile.

Native New Yorker Eric Staller has lived in Amsterdam since 1994. His mobile works of art which he calls Urban UFO’s are well known world-wide, but particularly in Amsterdam. In his autobiographical book Out of My Mind Staller reveals that his mission is to challenge and surprise the world by appearing unexpectedly with his art outside of the normal exhibition venues, and in so doing, engage the public in a dialog, whether they want to not.

Bubbleheads & Lightmobile
Coming after the Lightmobile and the Bubbleboat, Bubbleheads is the third work in Staller’s Urban UFO series. He says:

“If you see the Bubbleheads coming down your street, late at night while you’re out walking your dog, you pretty much jump when we appear, silently, pedaling in unison, part human, part humanoid.”

The unusual Bubbleheads caught the eye of the producers of the hit film Men in Black, and were featured in the film.

After his reading at The American Book center, Staller will pedal Bubbleheads through Amsterdam, starting at the Spui at 8pm. Of course, Staller’s most famous work, the Lightmobile will also be present to light up The Night of Books. You can see the VW Beetle with its 1600+ computer controlled lightbulbs from 7pm on the Spui.

There’s much more going on tomorrow night! See ABC’s Night of Books full program. The program for the entire night, which includes all the activities going in Amsterdam for this amazing night is available in Dutch on the AWBS site.

Bookstore Banners

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

If you’ve been ABC Amsterdam lately, you’ll probably have noticed the rather festive decoration on the windows of all major book stores in the area. To celebrate Amsterdam’s year as World Book Capital, The American Book Center, Waterstones, De Kinderboekenwinkel II, Selexyz and Atheneum have all been decked with storefront banners.

banner1.JPG

From a distance, they look the same; one long ribbon of color binding all the bookstores  in Amsterdam’s book quarter together. Close up, you’ll see that the colors used are inspired by the basic printers ink colors, and that each banner has a printed message: quotes from literature chosen by staff at each store, which do a  great job of reflecting the personalities of the booksellers inside. We chose:

“Books are humanity in print”- Barbara Tuchman
“All literature is gossip” – Truman Capote
“Never judge a book by its movie”- J.W.Eagan

Which quote would you have chosen?

banner2.JPGWhile a healthy spirit of competition exists between all the bookstores in the area, there’s also a sense – and excuse me for putting on my very sappy marketeer hat now, but this is actually true – that each store offers something unique. Booksellers are a funny lot and most of the time, we want to match books and people together. So if your book match is likely to be at another bookstore, we’ll happily point you in their direction. Just follow the funky bookstore banners and say ABC sent you.

Voorleesmarathon

Yesterday marked the start of the Amsterdam World Book Capital festivities. Part of that included a storytelling marathon in various places, and at the American Book Center in Amsterdam five excellent authors enthralled whoever would listen for a half an hour each. Thank you to Amal Chatterjee, Nina Siegal, Julie Phillips, Pete Jordan, and Manjit Kaur for doing such a stellar job!
