In Mexico the ‘Día de Muertos‘ (Day of the Dead) is a cheerful, exuberant celebration of profound significance. Food is prepared for consumption and a portion is offered on the altar in the family home. The dead are invited to pay a visit to the living. Death is symbolized by figurines made of candy, plaster or paper. All over Mexico one sees skeletons, skulls and sugar hearts on display and for sale. The next of kin pay a visit to their deceased loved ones, do maintenance on and adorn the graves with flowers and food.
Mexican artist Emilio Sanchez Diaz and Myr Berger present an altar in the window of the ABC in Amsterdam dedicated to the dead: Ofrenda Altar de Muertos, on the occasion of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Margarita Fuentes and Cinthia Fuentes made the skeletons as a contribution.

The display will last from November 1st through November 14th.
