Two weeks’ worth in one, since I’ll be away next week!
First, Into the Wild, directed by Sean Penn and starring Emile Hirsch, opens tomorrow. It’s based on the book by Jon Krakauer, and tells the true story of Chris McCandles, who abandoned civilization, hitchhiked to Alaska, and walked into the wilderness there to seek solitude. The movie was nominated for various awards, including two Academy Awards.
And next week Silk opens, based on the book by Alessandro Baricco, and starring Keira Knightley and Michael Pitt. This is the story of Hervé Joncour, married silkworm smuggler in the 19th century, who travels to Japan for his cargo. While he is there he becomes obsessed with the concubine of a local baron. By all accounts this novelette is a beautiful, sensual read, well worth your trouble!
