ABC Event: Hello Kitty: The Global Brand with Nine Lives

Hello Kitty is Japan’s brilliant answer to Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse.

NY Times journalist Ken Belson, author of Hello Kitty: The Remarkable Story of Sanrio and the Billion Dollar Feline Phenomenon, will visit the ABC Amsterdam Treehouse to talk about Japan’s most famous cartoon cat. He’ll explain how she and other Sanrio characters have become a global cultural phenomenon, and the inner workings of the company that created her, Sanrio.

Ken will also discuss the Japanese concept of kawaii (cute) and its ubiquitous presence in Japan; and how Hello Kitty became the emblem of the cute movement starting in the 1970s. He will overview Sanrio’s success in positioning its products to appeal consumers of all ages, resulting in Sanrio characters being found not only on toys, notebooks and backpacks, but also on mobile phones, toasters and even cars.

In short, the presentation will offer something for everyone: businesspeople, marketeers, designers, pop culture followers, and those who just love Hello Kitty!
