The Return Of The Bookbits…
Awards! Henry Hitching’s The Secret Life of Words won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize (for literature by a UK/Commonwealth writer under 35). He beat out Aravind Adiga, amongst others. See the shortlist here.
- Awards II! Marcus Trescothick, former England cricketer, won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year for his autobiography Coming Back to Me. Also, London’s mayor’s sister, Rachel Johnson, won the Bad Sex Award for her novel Shire Hell. And Alex Ross won the Guardian’s First Book Prize for The Rest is Noise.
- I rather enjoyed this lengthy and somewhat rambling post about the pros and cons of books and internet, as well as the basics of storytelling, and how it will always exist, whether as a book, a video game or a soap opera.
Ooo, controversial: The Oxford Junior Dictionary has replaced such words as “bishop,” “monarch” and “chapel” with “broadband” and “celebrity“. Hmmmmm…
- Should you be in New York City any time soon, be sure to visit the New York Public Library for a look at the world’s most expensive book.
- Jamie Oliver now has his own magazine! We’re trying very hard to get it…
