Five opera houses and a festival have joined forces for Written on Skin, a co-production of the second and long awaited opera of George Benjamin with text by playwright Martin Crimp. George Benjamin himself will be coming to Amsterdam to conduct it.
In Written on Skin, the Protector, a rich, cruel landowner commissions a young artist to make a parchment book of illustrations. The book is meant to become a mirror of the Protector’s cruel use of power, but also of his private happiness with his wife Agnès. She is not enamored of her young guest, at first, but gradually she becomes fascinated by him. She asks him to make a portrait of her, and soon the erotic tension between them mounts, with disastrous consequences…
Written on Skin, directed by theater director Katie Mitchell, is an exploration of power, love, eroticism and desperation, and perfect as a first taste of modern opera!
