Awards! The International Thriller Awards 2012 were handed out last month. The winners are 11.22.63 by Stephen King (Best Hard Cover), The Last Minute by Jeff Abbott (Best Paperback), and Spiral by Paul McEuen (First Novel). Published-author-to-be David mailed me about them just as I left for my vacation – hence my tardy mention. Sorry David!
- Awards II! Jen Hadfield won the Edwin Morgan Poetry Competition (in which poems are submitted anonymously) for The Kids. Hear the five shortlisted poets read their poems at the Edinburgh International Book Festival here.
- Interview! The Guardian has a lengthy interview with/piece on Ian McEwan, who just published Sweet Tooth. The NY Times also has a Q&A with Molly Ringwald about her upcoming book When It Happens To You.
If you’re a sucker for a beautiful book cover like me, you’ll enjoy these 20 theories (and examples) of successful book design.
- Here are some simply marvelous pictures of authors who appeared at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. I love them; so good to see the face behind the writing sometimes.
- Andrew Motion muses on sequels and prequels. He has made me want to read Wide Sargasso Sea now. “Thanks to the machine world we have invented, it has never been so easy to match our hunger for stability with our appetite for change.”
- Insane acts of writing? Cracked.com takes an irreverent look at 6 of them.
The Huffington Post is incredibly excited about all the upcoming books this fall. I can’t blame them, though, because (sometimes posthumous) new titles by J. K. Rowling, Hanna Rosin, Salman Rushdie, Christopher Hitchens, Stephen Colbert, and Tom Wolfe are all due in the next months!
- The Heathman Hotel in Seattle now has several Fifty Shades-related deals. So, if you’re a fan and want to emulate Christian and Anastasia’s time at the Heathman, book now.
- And finally: the delightful Sanne (Booksandquills) posted a video of her ABC haul. We love our customers!
