While serving as Ambassador of Palestine to the Netherlands, Washington, London, The Vatican and Moscow, Afif Safieh has been a passionate proponent of peace in Palestine. In his capacity, he has interacted with the leading politicians of our time such as Yasser Arafat, John Major, Tony Blair, Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, Madeleine Albright and Pope John Paul II.
Safieh is an impassioned crafter of words. His new book, The Peace Process: From Breakthrough to Breakdown, is a collection of his speeches and essays. It includes some surprises for those who do not yet know him: an interview with Dr. Gene Sharp on non-
violent struggle, minutes of evidence given at a hearing of the British Foreign Relations committee during the first Gulf War, a personal soliloquy on
Jerusalem, where his family have lived as Christians for centuries, eulogies for his friend Edward Said and for Yasser Arafat.
Come meet the man at one of our three events as he presents his book and tells us how he found time to write while serving in several of the world’s most challenging diplomatic postings.
