You Review: Lit by Mary Karr

Mary Karr’s life, full of ups and downs, is described in her book Lit. The book is a memoir about mostly the difficulties of her life: her unhappy childhood, her struggling to be a poet, her divorce and her problems with alcohol, which leads to her time in an AA clinic.

At first, she is in denial that she is an alcoholic, but during her time in the clinic she figures things out discovers religion, which helps her to get rid of her alcohol abuse. After her time in the hospital, Mary tries and succeeds in picking up her life again.

Lit is a very impressive book. I honestly think you have to read the previous books (Liar’s Club, Cherry) to understand more of Mary’s family history and past, something I missed in this book which made it a bit confusing.

The book was enjoyable to read, although a bit heavy at some points because of all the things happening in her life. If you are really looking for a more serious read, I recommend it! A very different but good read.
