Bookstack…and then it was December 31st, 2009.  Another year just flew by, and a new one is anxious to get started.

Thank you to everyone out there for sending in your contributions, reading this blog (and sometimes commenting, too), and above all, shopping with us in Amsterdam or Den Haag (or online).  We love having you as customers, and we’ll try to fill the shelves with lots more yummy reading material in 2010.  :-)

And now: we asked for your favorites, and four of you were kind enough to send in lists, filled with a fabulous selection of books across all genres.  So, without (much) further ado, here are the books that brightened your year(more…)

Shelf Obsession: Em Angevaare

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

You’ve been invited to dinner at someone’s home. Your host is busy in the kitchen and you wait in the living room. What do you do to pass the time? Admit it: you snoop around their bookshelves don’t you? We know you love shelf snooping just as much as we do, and now you can check out all sorts of bookshelves via the ABC blog.

Em is a regular contributor to Do You Read Me?. He reads widely and he reads a lot. We had a peek at his bookshelves and were amazed by two things: a) how many books there are, and b) how neat he keeps them!

Click on the photos to have a proper nosy look at all the books Em has. :-) There’s more after the jump!

I can see some classic Penguin covers framed on the wall. Which books are they from? (more…)

ABC’s Spiritual Book Club kicks off the New Year with Frequency!

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

The first meeting of
The ABC Spiritual Book Club in 2010 will be on Sunday 10 January, from 3pm to 5pm in the ABC Treehouse in Amsterdam.

We will discuss  Frequency: The Power of Personal Vibration by Penney Peirce:

frequencyWe often don’t notice that our spirit, thoughts, emotions, and body are all made of energy. Everything is vibrating. In fact, each of us has a personal vibration that communicates who we are to the world and helps shape our reality. In Frequency, Penney Peirce shows you how to feel your personal vibration and work intentionally with energy to transform your life. By learning to find your “home frequency” — the highest, most natural personal vibration you can attain — you can maximize clarity, minimize struggle, and discover new talents and capacities.

Hope to see you all there!

If life is a road, then books are my signposts.

Monday, December 28th, 2009

If  life is a road, then the signposts on  it, in my case at least, are the covers of books.

There are dark stretches where there were no signposts because I was too lost and tired to read anything except the instructions on a can of soup. But mostly, I did read, and for each stage of my life I have mental snapshots of what I was reading and where I read it, and they remind me of who I was then. And the funny thing is, those signposts aren’t the covers of books by prize winners or literary darlings. Most of them aren’t even ABC Evergreens. They are much more mundane. (more…)

ABC’s Favorite Books of 2009, part Blogmistress

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

BookstackxmastreeIs it really December 24th already?  Unbelievable.  And accidentally well-timed, too, since there are only two top 5s left in our bag full of recommendations.  So, without further ado, here are Hayley and my favorites of the past year.  We hope you enjoyed reading about what everyone at ABC loved this past year – and maybe we gave you some tips to check out, too!

Which still reminds me: we would love to know what your 5 favorite reads of the past year were (they don’t have to be books published in 2009).  Please send them to blog@abc.nl (it’s still not too late!)(really!), and please include your mailing address so we can send you an ABC gift voucher as our thank you.

Finally, happy holidays from all of us here at ABC!  Wherever you’re spending them, we hope they will be days filled with love, warmth and books.

ABC’s Favorite Books of 2009, part F

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

BookstackAh yes, it’s December, the time of looking over the past year and deciding what was great, what was so-so, and what could be done better next year.  In what is now very much a tradition, the ABC staff has been rootling through the books they read over the past year to decide what were the proper gems and what were the baubles.  Over the next few days and weeks Hayley and I will be posting their favorites.

Which reminds me: we would love to know what your 5 favorite reads of the past year were (they don’t have to be books published in 2009).  Please send them to blog@abc.nl (it’s not too late!)(really!), and please include your mailing address so we can send you an ABC gift voucher as our thank you.

In this penultimate edition you’ll see what Klaartje, Sander, and Ward loved reading this past year.  Fair warning: they’re a talkative lot!  So who is thinking about joining a new church started by demons?  Who’s an RPGer (and soon to join me as a level 80 in WoW!)(and no, I will not mention what kind of a day it was today for him ;-) )?  And who’s not fond of a writer’s bag of tricks?

Our Wonderful ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ Window

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Bookstores tend to attract creative, quirky personel. Working at ABC’s stores are artists, film makers, musicians, published authors, journalists, and singers, plus a few creative types that defy categorisation. :-) It makes it a great place to work. It also means that if we need anything creative done, we can often do it ourselves, and often even better than the professionals do. And much cheaper too. ;-)

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak At our Amsterdam store, we have a smallish window on the side of the building, opposite the tram stop that lends itself to dramatic displays. Sometimes we let Jasper loose on it with some paper and paint, and a few mechanical bits and pieces and with those he performs miracles.

A couple of months ago Jasper created a Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters window, with moving waves and a slimy monstrous tentacle writhing among them. We thought that was amazing. But now, he’s outdone himself.

Behold: Jasper’s wonderful Where The Wild Things Are window! Apparently the tree moves when you aren’t looking at it. :-)

In part E you’ll find the favorites of Jesse, Femke, and Martijn.  One discovered the literary delights of Jim Butcher, one lists a blog-turned-into-a-book, and one feeds her demons.

You Review: Lies My Mother Never Told Me by Kaylie Jones

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Lies My Mother Never Told Me by Kaylie JonesReviewed by Anouschka van Leeuwen

This book tells the story of Kaylie Jones, daughter of writer James Jones (most famous for the book From Here to Eternity). Growing up amidst a flock of well known people (among whom was Frank Sinatra), Kaylie is struggling with her parents’ drinking problems, and later on, her father’s death and the problematic relationship with her mother.

The title of this biography is explained by both the structure and the contents of the book. Each chapter starts off with an anecdote about Kaylie’s mother, which is in places quite ridiculous and makes you wonder whether this particular woman was in her right mind. Next to that, during the whole book, Kaylie’s attempts to get along with her mother take a central place in the story.

The life that is described in this book is pretty wild and absurd – it seems Kaylie’s life as a child was filled with drinking grown-ups, while her life as an adult was filled with overcoming her own drinking problem. This description may sound like a tear-jerker, but strangely enough, I was not once moved by Kaylie’s story. Maybe this is because of the way the story is told: it is not chronological, and in each chapter, some mysterious person pops up that Kaylie describes as being very important to her, but then in the rest of the book, those people are nowhere to be seen again.

In short, I never really delved into the story. Although a biography may not have to be ‘gripping’ like a fictional story, it does not have to be chaotic either. This book certainly is chaotic. On a positive note, fans of James Jones may like this book, because they get a nice view into his life as well. Otherwise, I would not recommend it.

ABC’s Favorite Books of 2009, part D

Part D is a very wordy one, as Aviva, Tom and Maarten will show you exactly why they liked each book they listed, and at length, too.  You’ll see some books already picked as a Top Read in part A, B, or C, but also books about homosexual necrophilia in animals, celebrity memoirs, and aspidistras.
