Stephenie Meyer Stock Update

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Just before Christmas, I promised lots of customers that I would post on the blog when the new stock of Stephenie Meyer came in. Twilight, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn are all in stock again. New Moon is still sold out and pretty hard  to get hold of. We’ve placed orders everywhere we can think of that still has stock. When they arrive. we’ll let you know!

Edit:  In Den Haag, we only have Breaking Dawn left (posted on 02.01.2009).  Large quantities of everything have been reordered, and we can always make a reservation for you.

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Happy holidays and all the very best wishes for the coming year to all you wonderful, fabulous customers and readers!

Hayley and I will virtually put our weary feet up for a week or so, but we’ll be back and posting with new vigor in 2009.  Thank you to everyone who helps fill up the blog (yes, that means you, dear colleagues, excellent You Reviewers, and faithful comment-makers) – without you, it wouldn’t be the cozy place on the web that it is!

Oh, and P.S.  Don’t forget to let us know what your favorites of the year were!  We’ll put them all in a special post in January!

Bookbits for December 23rd, 2008

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

The very last Bookbits of the year!  I’d write more about that, but this is the busiest time of the year in the store and I get home all wiped out.  :-)   So you’ll just have to make do with some basic tidbits:

Carrie Fisher bares not-quite all in a funny memoir

Toasting Princess Leia

Carrie Fisher’s life was always an autobiography waiting to happen. As the daughter of the eccentric Debbie Reynolds – of Singing in the Rain fame – and singer Eddie Fisher, she grew up in a Hollywood family under great public scrutiny. Carrie compares the level of public interest in her family to the Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie merger. Ms. Reynolds was soon dumped by Mr. Fisher for a certain Ms. Taylor. A merry dance of Hollywood relationships ensued, her parents making their romantic way among the famous and powerful.

Carrie meanwhile, landed a certain movie role that she would never live down, no matter how hard she still tries: that of Princess Leia  in the original Star Wars trilogy. The silly ‘buns on the side’ hairstyle and golden bra from Return of the Jedi haunt her to this day. She embarked on an ill-fated relationship with Paul Simon and then on an equally doomed relationship with a Hollywood producer who left her for a man, but not before gifting her with a much adored daughter. During all of this, she battled with what was ultimately diagnosed as bipolar disorder, and accompanying drug and alcohol problems. Oh, and I see I forgot to mention that one of her best friends died at her home one night.

Considering the large amounts of interesting material at her disposal, it is surprising how relatively thin the autobiography is that has finally hit bookstores: Wishful Drinking. When you also take into account its large black and white photos and illustrations in combination with a large font size, it’s no wonder that you will be able to go through it in a couple of hours. There are plenty of quotable lines to keep you entertained, but the book stays frustratingly close to the surface, skipping over interesting topics while hinting at untold depths. She allows the readers into her life, but only so far. She is admirably open, however, about her bipolar disorder and addiction problems. In fact, the reason for writing the book is supposedly that she is going through voluntary shock treatment to handle her condition and wants to capture her memories while she still has them.

width=Wishful Drinking apparently ties in with her one-woman show of the same name and it seems a little more could have been done to convert it into a ‘proper’ autobiography. There are jumps back and forth in chronology, certain events being referenced a couple of times in different chapters and some of the jokes are repeated. With references to Sarah Palin and the financial crisis, the book does feel fresh, but it gives the impression that it was rushed to the printer without a good final polish. Her writing is less tight than in her previous works, the most famous one being the semi-autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge. Often Wishful Drinking reads like a speech that has been transcribed: too much spoken language and not quite literary. Still, for anybody curious about Princess Leia in the real world – or Hollywood in any case – it is good for an entertaining couple of hours, even if you don’t learn much about the behind-the-scenes at the Star Wars movies. But I did come away from reading this book with the knowledge that according to George Lucas, there are no bras in space. Which is important to know.

Topical Tips: Serious Request

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

It’s time again for the now annual 3FM Serious Request donation drive.  This year the 3 djs have set up their glass house in Breda, and all the money collected goes to help refugees worldwide.  If you haven’t already, please consider donating some money to their cause – here are all the ways you can help (in Dutch).  You can help out until Wednesday evening.

  1. The State of the World’s Refugees: Human Displacement in the New Millennium.  An official UNHCR report.
  2. The Social Meaning of Money by Viviana A. Zelizer. This is a study of how money was spent over a hundred years ago, but if you look beyond that specific period of time, it presents an interesting picture of money as a living, social concept that people earmark in various ways.  Just think about how you look at money in different ways when it comes to shopping, paying rent, or giving to charities – it has a different flavor each time you spend it!
  3. Grassroots Philanthropy by Bill Somerville and Fred Setterberg. For what is Serious Request but a grassroots movement?  Four years ago it all started, and this year there are Glass Houses in Belgium and Sweden.  Go go go!
  4. The Refugees: A Tale of the Huguenot Persecution by Arthur Conan Doyle.  In case you thought refugees were a recent phenomenon.
  5. What is the What by Dave Eggers.  A fictionalized biography of Valentino Achak Deng, who was separated from his family and forced to flee to Kenya from Sudan when he was just seven years old (that’s my daughter, next year – scary thought).  By all accounts a fabulous book – highly recommended!
