Store Bits: Free Comic Book Day, Ziggy Marley, Power Couples and Spotlight on Romance

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014

Were you one of the people that came by our stores on May 3rd as part of Free Comic Book Day?  Our Luke snapped a few pictures of the ABC Amsterdam First Floor Crew getting into the spirit of things…  :-)  If you missed it, no worries: the next one is on May 2nd, 2015!

Our Rick got Ziggy Marley to sign his copy of I Love You, Too (ebook available here).

Luke spotted Batman and Cleopatra on ABC Amsterdam’s Film & TV shelf.  I think he’s spot-on in thinking this could be the perfect power couple!

And not one but two Romance tidbits!  First of all, I have to blush a little bit because Suzanne from wrote a lovely blog post about one of the Blind Book Dates from my Romance section at ABC The Hague.  So fun to read the book’s journey, and I really hope she’ll enjoy the incendiary book…  ;-)  (There’s an ebook here, although we can’t quite wrap those up, so it won’t exactly be a blind date!)

Also, at ABC The Hague there’s a bit of a spotlight the coming month on Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series.  If you’re like me you’ve been impatiently awaiting the new instalment, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.  It’s due out in June, so that’s just enough time to complete your series, reread all the previous titles or else get someone else hooked, don’t you think?  The first part of the series, Outlander, is now only €8,99!  (Ebook available under its UK title, Cross Stitch.)

Store Bits: Out-of-print Crime, fascinating steps, an interview, find a new literary crush

Saturday, April 12th, 2014

“These out-of-print classic crime titles are once again available on our shelves at ABC Amsterdam in prestine condition (one copy per title only)! This month among the titles, the scary When Michael Calls by John Farris and the creepy Blood Secrets by Craig Jones.  All books are EUR 10.99.” – Jilles

Luke shot some proof that ABC always has something fascinating for you to discover, even if you can’t read yet.  :-)

(In case you were wondering: they’re looking at a step-stool.)

Former ABC customer Verushka interviewed Lynn, Avo and Karin for her eclectic pop culture website pop.edit.lit!  Check out the interview here.

And Sophie (that would be yours truly) hopes you’ll discover a new literary crush among the fresh batch of blind book dates she’s put up on the Romance shelf at ABC The Hague.  Hubba hubba!

Store Bits: Bukowski again, 80 Beers, David Hewson and NSS 2014

Friday, March 21st, 2014

If you have a chance, come to the Bukowski exhibit at the ABC Treehouse in Amsterdam this weekend.  Photographer Joan Gannij will be there on Saturday and Sunday, the 22nd and 23rd, from 14 – 17 hrs; it’ll be your last chance to see Bukowski pictures and artifacts!  You can see some pictures of the opening earlier this month on our Facebook page.

Our Luke reports that Tim Skelton came by ABC Amsterdam to drop off more of his popular book Around Amsterdam in 80 Beers – so Luke got him to sign them!  He also says to stay tuned for a possible summer event centered around a new book about beer temples and festivals.  You can be sure we’ll post about it here…

Author David Hewson is launching The House of Dolls, his new thriller series set in Amsterdam, at ABC Amsterdam next month.  He’s quite excited about it, as you can read on his blog:-)   Of course, so are we!  He also posted a free iBook with background to his new series, for those of you that want to do some homework.

And finally, you might have heard about the NSS 2014, the Nuclear Security Summit happening in The Hague next week.  If you’re planning to come to The Hague, be aware of quite a few road closures and diversions, etc.  An overview of all that’s happening can be found here (in Dutch, though).  Luckily, most of the alterations aren’t in the center where ABC is, so drop by any time!

ABC’s Gift Ideas: History/Politics, Horror, Humor, Local Interest/Living Abroad

Monday, November 11th, 2013

The gift-giving season is upon us – hooray!

The ABC Staff has rummaged through their sections and order lists, and come up with another year’s worth of wonderful gift ideas for you: from fiction to history to cookbooks to children’s books to travel to non-books and onwards.

In a series of blog posts and recommendation lists throughout the coming month, you will find what we think will make great gifts, whether you celebrate Sinterklaas, Christmas or just like giving books to people. And since we’re a bookstore, these posts will be alphabetical by subject. :-)

Today you’ll find gift ideas for History/Politics, Horror, Humor and Local Interest/Living Abroad as picked out by section buyers Maarten, Barry, Ester, Luke, Martijn, Tom and Agnes. Bear in mind that this is just the tip of the iceberg – come to either one of our stores to browse many, many more titles in any of these subjects.

We are ready as ever to be your personal shoppers again this year, and hope you will find our selections useful and inspiring!

You can find our gift ideas from previous years here (scroll down a bit pas 2013), and be sure to have a look at our ABC Favorites, too.

Store Bits: ABC in the media

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

A special Store Bits this week featuring ABC or ABC staff in other media the past months!

Our Reinoud was interviewed for English Breakfast Radio Amsterdam last month.  He talked about Dutch authors in translation like Arnon Grunberg and Herman Koch, and our Espresso Book Machine.

Speaking of Arnon Grunberg, check out this video about the launch of the English translation of Tirza (and a belated birthday celebration for Mr. Grunberg :-) )!  The video includes some reading aloud from the book and a few insights into the process of translating.

Can you spot ABC’s Luke, Rick, and Lynn?

Launch of the American edition of Arnon Grunberg’s novel Tirza from Arnon Grunberg on Vimeo.

A bit older but still interesting:  Rick’s 25th ABC anniversary was highlighted in Het Parool, Sophie gave some reading recommendations to The Hague Expat radio program DutchBuzz, ABC was featured on RTL 7’s Business Channel, and Lynn, Nadine and Paul were interviewed for the NRC series on family businesses (sadly only viewable if you have a subscription, though).
