ABC’s Gift Ideas: Sports, Street Art, Tattoo

Monday, November 25th, 2013

The gift-giving season is upon us – hooray!

The ABC Staff has rummaged through their sections and order lists, and come up with another year’s worth of wonderful gift ideas for you: from fiction to history to cookbooks to children’s books to travel to non-books and onwards.

In a series of blog posts and recommendation lists throughout the coming month, you will find what we think will make great gifts, whether you celebrate Sinterklaas, Christmas or just like giving books to people. And since we’re a bookstore, these posts will be alphabetical by subject. :-)

Today you’ll find gift ideas for Sports, Street Art and Tattoo as picked out by section buyers Martijn and Paul. Bear in mind that this is just the tip of the iceberg – come to either one of our stores to browse many, many more titles in any of these subjects.

We are ready as ever to be your personal shoppers again this year, and hope you will find our selections useful and inspiring!

You can find our gift ideas from previous years here (scroll down a bit pas 2013), and be sure to have a look at our ABC Favorites, too.

ABC Meets: Blogger Nalden and pop cult illustrator Dennis de Groot

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

This Saturday, September 10th, we’ll be hosting influential Dutch blogger, Nalden, and the pop-cult artist Dennis de Groot at ABC Amsterdam, where they’ll talk about their new books: Bare Essentials and Mobile Snapshots.

Inspired by work of the likes of Saul Bass, Ben Bos and Keith Haring, graphic designer Dennis de Groot started a study on the usage of geometric shapes in illustrations. He began illustrating pop culture characters, who had formed his own palette of inspiration throughout the years, by reducing them to necessary shapes and colors. Bare Essentials explores the line between recognition and detail through 50 illustrations of cartoon, movie, video game & comic book characters in their ‘barest essentials’.

Nalden.net is an eminently clickable website, not only technically nifty, but with tons of articles on music, design, art, trends, artists, and much much more. Nalden is all about a lifestyle for digital natives. This highly influential, incredibly cool blog includes stories supported by audio, video, snapshots, and photo galleries. Some people think this is about trends, but it is more about curated observations.  Mobile Snapshots: From Blogger to Brand visualizes Naldens personal and bizarre journey from the bus stop in his hometown to the digital heights of Nalden.net, WeTransfer.com and his new project Kuvva.com.  Click here and here for articles about Nalden (both sites in Dutch).

At 12:30 pm, Nalden and Dennis will be interviewed by Maurice Ajanaku, influential founder of the trend-spotting blog ajanuku.com.

Limited edition signed prints of Dennis de Groot’s Bare Essentials Ninja Turtle (on the cover of his book) will be available, priced at € 50. And of course, you can pick up your copies of of Dennis’ book Bare Essentials and Nalden’s book Mobile Snapshots: From Blogger to Brand. Both our guests will be happy to sign them!
