Let us be your personal shoppers!

ABC’s booksellers don’t just sell books: as well as being voracious readers, almost all ABC staff members are personally responsible for buying the books for one or more sections in the stores. That means you’ll always find someone who can put exactly the right book in your hands when you need it. We asked our buyers for their tips for the best gifts for the upcoming holiday season, and they came up with some great ones: new books, classic books, magazines, games, merchandise, and stationery.

Today you’ll find gift ideas for Film & Television, Music, Photography, Fashion and Crafts as supplied by Ester, Nyjolene, Marten and Sophie.

Two tickets for the price of one at FOAM Amsterdam

Friday, May 11th, 2012

The Amsterdam photography museum FOAM is holding an exhibition of photographs from Kathy Ryan’s The New York Times Magazine Photographs until May 30th.

Show an ABC receipt for €15 or more at the ticket desk at the museum and you’ll get two tickets to the exhibition for the price of one!

The New York Times Magazine Photographs by Kathy Ryan

The New York Times Magazine Photographs reflects upon and interrogates the very nature of both photography and print magazines at this pivotal moment in their history and evolution. This volume presents some of the finest commissioned photographs worldwide in four sections: reportage, portraiture, style and conceptual photography, including photo illustration.

The photographs are accompanied by reproduced tear sheets to allow for the examination of sequencing and the interplay between text and image, simultaneously presenting the work while illuminating its distillation to magazine form. This process is explored further through texts offering behind-the-scenes perspective and anecdotes by the many photographers, writers, editors and other collaborators whose voices have been a part of the magazine over the years. The New York Times Magazine Photographs serves as a springboard for a rigorous, necessary and revitalized examination of photography as presented within a modern journalistic context.

About Platon

Platon was born in London in 1968. He attended St. Martin’s School of Art, and after receiving his BA with honors in Graphic Design, he was then awarded an MA in photography and fine art at the Royal College of Art. While still a student, he received British Vogue’s “Best up-and-coming Photographer” award in 1992.

Platon left London in 1998 after spending a few years working for George, the magazine about politics and media culture founded by the late John F. Kennedy, Jr. Recruited to shoot for its premiere issue, Platon maintained a long-term relationship with the magazine.

Since the early 1990s, Platon has continued to shoot portraits, and documentary work for a range of international publications, including The New Yorker, Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Esquire, GQ, and The Sunday Times Magazine. His advertising credits include campaigns for Credit Suisse Bank, Exxon Mobil, Diesel, the Wall Street Journal, Motorola, Nike, Converse, Verizon, Vittel, Levi’s, IBM, Rolex, Ray-Ban, Tanqueray, Kenneth Cole, Issey Miyake, Moschino, Timex and Bertelsmann among others.

In 2007 Platon photographed Russian Premier Vladimir Putin for Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year Cover. This image was awarded the coveted 1 st prize at 2008 World Press Photo Contest.

Platon is now a staff photographer at The New Yorker, signing a multi-year contract in 2008.

About the book

Platon’s first monograph Platon’s Republic, was published in 2004.

Now in his second book, Platon brings readers face to face with the major world leaders of today. In this one-of-a-kind collection, Platon World Press Photographer of the Year turns his lens on 150 current international leaders from across the political spectrum to create a profound portrait of global power. Shot within a twelve-month period at the United Nations, and captured with unique candor and insight, these photographs offer an intimate glimpse of the personalities behind the public faces of the world’s most powerful decision-makers. With an incisive text by New Yorker editor and Pulitzer Prize winner David Remnick, this comprehensive historical record of our time is an essential volume for anyone interested in world politics.
