Prize Draw Winners for Books That Made Us Cry

Friday, June 14th, 2013

Many thanks to everyone who entered our Books That Made Us Cry prize draw!  Hopefully the following three people can stanch the flow of their tears with our gift certificate:

Henry Kloostra

Sabine Poiesz

David Swatling

As usual, you had many wonderful book suggestions.  See the list below, and every entrant’s reason for crying (warning, some spoilers ahead!).

The Catcher in the Rye – J. D. Salinger

The Cry Lines: One page before the end of Chapter 25, at the carrousel, in the pouring rain. “Then what she did-it damn near killed me-she reached in my coat pocket and took out my red hunting hat and put it on my head”.
Reason: In the gesture that Phoebe makes here, Holden sees, in a flash, how to love, and what to do with the rest of his life. The rain all around is in fact his heart crying. And mine too.

The Time Traveler’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger

It tells a story of boy meets girl, but in such an unconventional escape from time-and-space that you feel the full brunt of the heartache: the sense of inevitability behind what is a beautiful love story but one riddled with impossibilities. The skin of the story is down-to-earth but the book beats with such a romantic heart.

+

At his birthday party, the protagonist knows he’s going to die soon, yet he couldn’t prevent it and he couldn’t bear to tell his loved ones about it.

Flowers for Algernon – Daniel Keyes

Of Mice And Men is downright comic compared to this tender cautionary tale (no pun intended). Sobbed at 16 and at 60, for the mouse, the man – oh no, I’m tearing up again…

Tuesdays with Morrie – Mitch Albom

I’ve never been so touched by a book. It made me feel so grateful for all the beautiful things in life, even though everything goes by and changes constantly.

A Street Cat Named Bob – James Bowen

It made me bawl like a baby. It’s a story of a man and a cat, both stranded in the streets of London, who one lucky day find each other and become companions. Together these two strays become the Two Musketeers, and life is so much better for it.

The God of Small Things – Arundhati Roy

She uses breathtaking images to paint a terribly strategic story in the most colorful way. It makes you reflect on all the injustice/cruelty out there, yet at the same time, you start appreciating and looking at the smaller things in life.

United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to decimate humanity itself…

The novel World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks are ABC favorites and steady sellers in our fantasy/horror/humor sections in The Hague and Amsterdam. On July 4th (US Independence Day!) World War Z will hit the theaters world-wide and a spectacular action movie like this you HAVE to see at an IMAX theater near you.

Leading man in the film, Brad Pitt, is also one of the producers. World War Z is planned to be the start of a blockbusting zombie thriller franchise.

Peter Travers (Rolling Stone): “It’s everything you want in a blockbuster – smart, shifty, and scary as hell.”

In cooperation with IMAX Pathé, we will be giving away 3 pairs of tickets to World War Z!

Just mail win@abc.nl by June 20th with your name and your answers to the following two questions:

  • What is your favorite zombie/disaster/post-apocalyptic book and why?
  • What would be your weapon of choice in the event of a zombie apocalypse?

Please put “World War Z” in the subject of your mail.  The winners, and everyone’s answers, will be put on the blog at the end of June.

Make sure you also have a gander at our upcoming World War Z window in Amsterdam, illustrated by artist Martin Pikkaart.

Win a Eur 15 ABC Gift Certificate with books that made you cry!

Friday, May 31st, 2013

The power of books to transport our emotions is unparalleled. How often have you found yourself chuckling to what a character thinks on the page in front of you? Or felt pure anger because of the injustice done to a favorite persona? Have you ever found yourself crying unashamedly at a book’s ending?

We have. We’ve found ourselves blubbering into a hankie on Bus 24 in The Hague, clutching a copy of The Road. And we’re not alone

To celebrate the extraordinary emotional pull of books we are planning a beautiful window at ABC Amsterdam in July and we need your help with filling it!

We will give a € 15 ABC gift certificate to the 3 people who send in the most heart-wrenching literary sob stories – and your book of choice and reason for crying will also be put on a special poster in the window.

Simply mail win@abc.nl by June 13th with the following information:

  • Your Name
  • Your Age
  • Your City of Residence
  • A fun fact that people should know about you
  • The title and author of the book that makes you cry, and why (try to restrict your reason to about 2 sentences, so it can fit on the poster).
  • Please be sure to add “Books that made me cry” in the subject!

Everyone’s answers will be gathered in a special blog post in July to celebrate those rivers of literary tears.
