Gift Ideas for Artists

Monday, October 20th, 2014

Ready or not, the gift-giving season is upon us! Whether you celebrate Sinterklaas, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah or any other opportunity to give presents during the dark days of the winter solstice, we’ve got ideas aplenty. As in previous years, the ABC Staff has looked through their sections and hand-picked various choice literary jewels for your gift-giving pleasure.

We will present these titles in a series of blog posts and recommendation lists throughout the coming month. We hope you will find some inspiration in them, but please remember that these titles only represent a tiny fraction of the books on offer in our stores. Be sure to stop by to see what else there is in the area of your interest!

Let’s start off with gifts for the artistic soul in your life with books from our Music, Art, Street Art, Tattoo and Fantasy Art sections.

You can find our gift ideas from previous years here (scroll down a bit to 2013 and beyond), and be sure to have a look at our ABC Favorites, too.

Every so often, unique titles turn up in otherwise unremarkable boxes of remaindered books. It’s like expecting glass beads and finding a real diamond. These titles are generally stunning photo books, numbered and often signed.

For example, would you like one of of the only 2500 copies ever made of Postcards from the Boys, compiled and signed by Ringo Starr? It can be yours for €2000. Or, if The Police is more your kind of band, one of the 1500 copies of I’ll Be Watching You by Andy Summers, for €750?

Visit ABC Amsterdam this week to see the various deluxe books on display in the window, or visit our Facebook page to view a few pictures.  Below are a some detailed shots of several of the books (click on a picture for a bigger version).

If you are interested in buying a copy for your library, mail for more information and prices.

Store Bits: New Scott Lynch, Abercrombie, Sanderson, a Bukowski tribute and live broom painting

Saturday, September 14th, 2013

Gentlemen Bastards fans!  Our Tiemen, ABC Amsterdam’s SF/Fantasy buyer, has arranged a lovely sneak peek for you, in collaboration with the fine folks at Random House USA.  *drum roll* We are happy to present you with the first chapter of the long-awaited third volume of Scott Lynch’s fantastic series, The Republic of Thieves, due out next month.    Click on the link below, and then on the little document picture (your blogmistress doesn’t know how to get it to you any more smoothly than that, sorry!  :-) )  Happy advance reading…

Chapter 1 of The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch

ABC The Hague’s SF/Fantasy buyer JeroenW is no slouch, either.  He reports news of new novels by Joe Abercrombie, writer of the very popular First Law Trilogy.  That’s not all, though – he’s found an online graphic novel of the First Law Trilogy, too.  New pages are uploaded every Mon-Wed-Fri.  (Image credit: First Law trilogy comic panel: artist Andie Tong, colorist Peter Pantazis, panel taken from

JeroenW also found an excerpt of Brandon Sanderson’s latest, Steelheart, in case, for some strange reason, you haven’t rushed out to buy it yet and want to test the waters, as it were.  Aren’t our SF/Fantasy buyers fabulous?  :-)

ABC’s Favorite Books of 2010, Part The First

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Whew, we made it to December 6th!  Sinterklaas is on his way home to Spain to enjoy his well-deserved rest, which means it must be time for us to start posting our colleagues’ Favorite Reads of the past year.  We hope you enjoy reading about what we enjoyed reading the past 12 months, and hopefully we’ll give you some ideas to boot!

This year we would again love to hear from you what your favorite reads were.  Please send us your top 5 (they don’t have to be books published in 2010, just read in 2010).  You can mail them to, and be sure to include your mailing address so we can send you an ABC gift voucher as a thank you.  We’ll publish your lists at the beginning of 2011 so you have all month to mail them in.

Without further ado, here are the first three lists, sent in by Paul, Simone, and Pleun.  Who discovered new authors?  Who met the scariest fictional person ever written?  And who laughed a lot?
